I think I'm fascinated by the power of religion in our culture. Like a lot of secular liberal people I ignored it for a long time. Lately of course just from a political perspective it's impossible to ignore.

  • 1. I feel like a lot of the female relationships I see on TV or in movies are in some way free of the kind of jealousy and anxiety and posturing that has been such a huge part of my female friendships which I hope lessens a little bit with age.
  • 2. To own the dominant or only newspaper in a mid-sized American city was for many decades a kind of license to print money. In the Internet age however no one has figured out how to rescue the newspaper in the United States or abroad.

2 Amazing

  • 1. My mom is a really good cook. I didn't get the cooking gene but she cooks this really amazing dinner every Christmas and that's always really fun.
  • 2. I tend to not watch things that are current. And then if everybody swears it's amazing then I'll like watch the whole series in a weekend.
  • 3. I thought I was dreaming. It was the most amazing moment of my entire life. Not only is Bill the love of my life but he's also my best friend. I couldn't believe my dream guy was asking me to marry him!

3 Anger

  • 1. Another night I dreamed I saw my father sweeping out the barn floor clean and would not suffer the wheat to be brought in the barn. He appeared to me to be in anger.
  • 2. I drank for about 25 years getting over the loss of my father and I took the anger out on myself. I did a good job at beating myself up at sometimes. I don't drink anymore but my alcoholic head occasionally says different. 'Nil By Mouth' was a love letter to my father because I needed to resolve some issues in order to be able to forgive him.
  • 3. Genuine forgiveness does not deny anger but faces it head-on.

4 Anniversary

  • 1. Under this window in stormy weather I marry this man and woman together Let none but Him who rules the thunder Put this man and woman asunder.
  • 2. Next month I will celebrate my 30th anniversary of marriage with my beautiful bride Vicki. Our marriage has been a blessing. I have gained even more respect for the institution over the past 3 decades and will defend it against attack.
  • 3. That there's no more important decision in life than who you marry.

5 Architecture

  • 1. I don't know why I've always been so captivated by architecture.
  • 2. Spiritual space is lost in gaining convenience. I saw the need to create a mixture of Japanese spiritual culture and modern western architecture.
  • 3. Rationalism is the enemy of art though necessary as a basis for architecture.
