The fact that we are I don't know how many millions of people yet communication complete communication is completely impossible between two of those people is to me one of the biggest tragic themes in the world.

People break down after a couple of hours. All the defenses go down and there's a kind of communication that if I spent 20 years in a living room with one of these people I would never never know as much about them as I do in that one day.

It's about communication. It's about honesty. It's about treating people in the organization as deserving to know the facts. You don't try to give them half the story. You don't try to hide the story. You treat them as – as true equals and you communicate and you communicate and communicate.

Strange about parents. We have such easy access to them and such daunting problems of communication.

1 Age

  • 1. One of my grandfathers actually having gone out there as a minister decided he would better serve the people as a doctor. So at a very late age – at the age of 38 in fact – he changed course and decided to become a doctor.
  • 2. I grew up on a farm in a small town where you do or say one thing and everybody knows about it. You see it happen there's always the town gossip – 'Oh did you hear about so and so or did you hear what went on in this household?' So I learned at a very young age just to keep my mouth shut.
  • 3. We virtually never feel our age but thinking that we should can lead to disaster.

2 Amazing

  • 1. It was amazing to me that all of a sudden I was hearing my music on the radio and coming out of cars.
  • 2. They were so good that you just had to sing the song to them once and they got it. It's amazing. Sometimes it didn't come out the way you wanted but it was good.
  • 3. When I receive letters from girls that say 'You give me confidence ' I think 'Wow this is amazing.' That's my goal: to let people know it's truly what's on the inside that counts.

3 Anger

  • 1. My therapist says I still haven't got in touch with my anger. Maybe one day I'm going to explode. But I'm still really happy. I know it looks like a strange and painful upbringing – all those experiences led me to the paths that I'm on now.
  • 2. Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned nor hell a fury like a woman scorned.
  • 3. My humour has always come from anger but I have to make sure I don't just get angry and jump on a soapbox.

4 Anniversary

  • 1. This anniversary serves to help remind the American people that in the wake of one of the greatest political scandals and misuse of power in our history as a nation scandal produced important reforms that served this nation well for two decades.
  • 2. On this important anniversary we must remember that while we have come a long way in eliminating barriers critical work remains to ensure all Americans can live up to their full potential.
  • 3. We had a relationship that lasted 44 years. Herbert and I lived together 10 years before we were married. He always gave me a little heart for whatever anniversary.

5 Architecture

  • 1. Architecture is the learned game correct and magnificent of forms assembled in the light.
  • 2. I like things that are kind of eclectic when one thing doesn't go with another. That's why I love Rome. The town itself is that way. It's where Fascist architecture meets classic Renaissance where the ancient bangs up against the contemporary. It has a touch of everything. That's my style and that's what my work is about.
  • 3. I don't build in order to have clients. I have clients in order to build.
