I have a lot of responsibilities outside myself. I have a large family. I want to know I can always be helpful.

My family makes these vinegars – out of everything from grapes to peaches and cherries. We go through the whole process with the giant vat and drainer label them and give them as Christmas presents.

1 Age

  • 1. Growing up on stage I was introduced to makeup at a young age and I will never forget the first time I tried on a L'Oreal Paris iconic lipstick – it was instant glamour and I've been hooked ever since.
  • 2. But look I was born in 1956 the peak year for births in US history. I think I'm very representative of many of the thought processes my generation have been through and by and large people of my age have had their imprint planted on the consciousness of western society for a long time.

2 Amazing

  • 1. It's amazing how over time a person's perspective can be altered.
  • 2. I auditioned for 'Girls' the fall after I graduated from Yale. The show has been amazing – as close to perfect as it gets!
  • 3. 'The Dance Scene' is basically the most amazing dance show in the world and it follows me as a creative director. You see how I maintain that creativity.

3 Anger

  • 1. The world in general doesn't know what to make of originality it is startled out of its comfortable habits of thought and its first reaction is one of anger.
  • 2. Anger is a transient hatred or at least very like it.
  • 3. My friends love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving hopeful and optimistic. And we'll change the world.

4 Anniversary

  • 1. Each year on the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s birth America has the opportunity to reflect on our nation's progress towards the realization of his dream.
  • 2. See the 'On the Road' that came out in 1957 was censored. A lot of the honesty of it the bitter honesty is in the original scroll version that came out in 2007 on the 50-year anniversary. Back then there was so much post-Second World War fear that was imposed on everybody – 'You must live life this way' – and these guys were bored.
  • 3. The London games mark the 24th anniversary of my winning two golds and setting the world record in the heptathlon. Someone is going to want it records are made to be broken – it's only a matter of time. I hope mine will outlive me.

5 Architecture

  • 1. All the revision in the world will not save a bad first draft: for the architecture of the thing comes or fails to come in the first conception and revision only affects the detail and ornament alas!
  • 2. Look architecture has a lot of places to hide behind a lot of excuses. 'The client made me do this.' 'The city made me do this.' 'Oh the budget.' I don't believe that anymore.
  • 3. People can inhabit anything. And they can be miserable in anything and ecstatic in anything. More and more I think that architecture has nothing to do with it. Of course that's both liberating and alarming.
