1 Age

  • 1. When I was younger my whole sense of self-worth was based on whether or not I was working which was awful. And I had a baby at 20 years old so it wasn't just about me. At around the age of 30 there was a stretch where I wasn't working – certainly not on anything I liked anyway – and I started to do other things.
  • 2. At the age of six I wanted to be a cook. At seven I wanted to be Napoleon. And my ambition has been growing steadily ever since.
  • 3. My mother inspired me to treat others as I would want to be treated regardless of age race or financial status.

2 Amazing

  • 1. In 29 years I had recorded over 2 200 songs. I was amazed.
  • 2. As a kid who wasn't into sports at school I felt almost alienated at times whereas in the theatre community there was this amazing sense of camaraderie. Early on we would go to rehearsals with my dad and I was like the mascot for the backstage crew. That was a big part of my childhood so I dreamed of one day doing a play in London.
  • 3. I love to go shopping at Target. They have so much stuff there you can buy almost anything it's really amazing.

3 Anger

  • 1. Usually when people are sad they don't do anything. They just cry over their condition. But when they get angry they bring about a change.
  • 2. Growing up in a particular neighborhood growing up in a working-class family not having much money all of those things fire you and can give you an edge can give you an anger.
  • 3. I suppose there's an anger in all of us. Some hidden rage that you keep at bay.

4 Anniversary

  • 1. Love is not weakness. It is strong. Only the sacrament of marriage can contain it.
  • 2. We are not the same persons this year as last nor are those we love. It is a happy chance if we changing continue to love a changed person.
  • 3. I've been sober for two-and-a-half years My children are happy. In August my wife and I will celebrate our fifteenth wedding anniversary. My band is back together with a sold-out tour.

5 Architecture

  • 1. We all love musical architecture there's no doubt about that.
  • 2. Less is more.
  • 3. I see the Beijing National Stadium as an architectural project. I accepted Herzog and De Meuron's invitation to collaborate on the design and our proposal won the competition. From beginning to end I stayed with the project. I am committed to fostering relationships between a city and its architecture.
