The fact that we are I don't know how many millions of people yet communication complete communication is completely impossible between two of those people is to me one of the biggest tragic themes in the world.

People break down after a couple of hours. All the defenses go down and there's a kind of communication that if I spent 20 years in a living room with one of these people I would never never know as much about them as I do in that one day.

It's about communication. It's about honesty. It's about treating people in the organization as deserving to know the facts. You don't try to give them half the story. You don't try to hide the story. You treat them as – as true equals and you communicate and you communicate and communicate.

Strange about parents. We have such easy access to them and such daunting problems of communication.

1 Age

  • 1. I remember at the age of five travelling on a trolley car with my mother past a group of women on a picket line at a textile plant seeing them being viciously beaten by security people. So that kind of thing stayed with me.
  • 2. I saw no African people in the printed and illustrated Sunday school lessons. I began to suspect at this early age that someone had distorted the image of my people. My long search for the true history of African people the world over began.
  • 3. I'm 20 years old. I like to party as much as anyone my age. Going clubbing is my way of relaxing or releasing a lot of stress. I don't feel that I should have to justify that part of my life. I don't know that I'm necessarily an addict.

2 Amazing

  • 1. I've always been fascinated with the juxtaposition of technology in music not only in recording but in the keyboard. It's amazing the way you can apply technology to an art form.
  • 2. Every now and then I have blissful moments of thanking God for all the amazing things that are happening. When I leave the White House after just meeting Obama or when I see my face on the cover of 'Rolling Stone' or when I meet someone who tells me that their daughter is inspired by me those are moments that are incredibly joyful.
  • 3. I was friends with all different people and all different groups. And that led me to being friends with a few people who didn't even go to my school. Now I have the most amazing collection of friends of all ethnic backgrounds and upbringing and financial backgrounds.

3 Anger

  • 1. Violence is a problem we all want to solve. I want to make sure that kids learn to deal with anger by learning how to talk with people to solve problems. Here in the United States Senate I want to make sure we have safe schools safe neighborhoods and good things for kids to do after school!
  • 2. Because society would rather we always wore a pretty face women have been trained to cut off anger.
  • 3. When you start suppressing feelings at an early age it hurts you down the road. Full expression of anger and pain is very important.

4 Anniversary

  • 1. My last trip to New Orleans was for the fifth anniversary of Katrina and I had the awesome opportunity to bring my family down. We all worked on a house together and met some of the families.
  • 2. On July 18 we will mark the 12th anniversary of the senseless loss of 85 lives in the bombing of the Jewish Cultural Center in Buenos Aires Argentina.
  • 3. The 150th anniversary of Penn State will highlight what is important and good about this distinguished institution and the fine people and research that it produces.

5 Architecture

  • 1. Every man's work whether it be literature or music or pictures or architecture or anything else is always a portrait of himself.
  • 2. I try to give people a different way of looking at their surroundings. That's art to me.
  • 3. My interest in architecture has always been sculptural. Most of my photography is of architecture.
