I am still profoundly troubled by the war in Nicaragua. The United States launched a covert war against another nation in violation of international law a war that was wrong and immoral.

And of course in the Philippines there were so many thousands of Americans that were captured by the Japanese and held and who were rescued by Filipino Americans or Filipinos I should say and by U.S. troops near the close of the war.

There is nothing worth having that can he obtained by nuclear war – nothing material or ideological – no tradition that it can defend. It is utterly self-defeating.

  • 1. Nice to be here? At my age it's nice to be anywhere.
  • 2. There are no college courses to build up self-esteem or high school or elementary school. If you don't get those values at a early age nurtured in your home you don't get them.

2 Amazing

  • 1. I walk into a kids' store and it's amazing the types of instruments – little squeaky things rattling things spinning tops.
  • 2. At the New York Athletic Club they serve amazing food. People go there get healthy and then eat themselves to death – which is I suppose the right way to do it.
  • 3. Being in an area of the planet where scientists believe mankind started is quite amazing.

3 Anger

  • 1. I've learned that football sometimes was an outlet. It was a way for me to release anger release frustration.
  • 2. When I was younger I was terrified to express anger because it would often kick-start a horrible reaction in the men in my life. So I bit my tongue. I was left to painstakingly deal with the aftermath of my avoidance later in life in therapy or through the lyrics of my songs.
  • 3. Anger is a short madness.

4 Anniversary

  • 1. Next month I will celebrate my 30th anniversary of marriage with my beautiful bride Vicki. Our marriage has been a blessing. I have gained even more respect for the institution over the past 3 decades and will defend it against attack.
  • 2. My last trip to New Orleans was for the fifth anniversary of Katrina and I had the awesome opportunity to bring my family down. We all worked on a house together and met some of the families.
  • 3. I've been in love with the same woman for forty-one years. If my wife finds out she'll kill me.

5 Architecture

  • 1. It's my goal to make a building as immaterial as possible. Architecture is a very material thing. It takes a lot of resources so why not eliminate what you don't need as long as you're able to achieve the same result?
  • 2. I love building spaces: architecture furniture all of it probably more than fashion. The development procedure is more tactile. It's about space and form and it's something you can share with other people.
  • 3. First there is the bare beauty of the logs themselves with their long lines and firm curves. Then there is the open charm felt of the structural features which are not hidden under plaster and ornament but are clearly revealed a charm felt in Japanese architecture.
