  • 1. I basically get stereotyped a lot in terms of being a girl and writing 'chick' music for teenage girls or something. I think if anything the press kind of because of my gender and my age tends to kind of relegate my work to this sort of special-interest group. It's part of the cultural dynamic I guess.
  • 2. The reason for the slow progress of the world seems to lie in a single fact. Every man is born under the yoke and grows up beneath the oppressions of his age.
  • 3. If you read back in the Bible the letter of the apostle Paul to the church of Thessalonia he said that in the latter days before the end of the age that the Earth would be caught up in what he called the birth pangs of a new order.

2 Amazing

  • 1. I've done my best to work from a place of humility – always looking over your shoulder saying 'Does this suck?' and I think that's a good way to work. The other way to work is where you start to think 'I'm on fire I'm amazing!' and I don't think that's the way to work.
  • 2. I guess winning an Oscar is the ultimate dream. A lot of amazing actors go their whole career without even being nominated. So that would definitely be a goal to reach. It's a difficult one but I'm aiming for it!
  • 3. At that time I had recently finished a book called Amazing Grace which many people tell me is a very painful book to read. Well if it was painful to read it was also painful to write. I had pains in my chest for two years while I was writing that book.

3 Anger

  • 1. I really believe that all of us have a lot of darkness in our souls. Anger rage fear sadness. I don't think that's only reserved for people who have horrible upbringings. I think it really exists and is part of the human condition. I think in the course of your life you figure out ways to deal with that.
  • 2. Always write angry letters to your enemies. Never mail them.
  • 3. My hope is that out of all the anger and seeming hostility that we hear in some of today's music will come some sort of coalition that will become politically involved.

4 Anniversary

  • 1. We can't forget what happened on May 4th 1970 when four students gave up their lives because they had the American constitutional right of peaceful protest. They gave up their lives. And to sing that song in that spot on that anniversary was very emotional for us.
  • 2. Some people ask the secret of our long marriage. We take time to go to a restaurant two times a week. A little candlelight dinner soft music and dancing. She goes Tuesdays I go Fridays.
  • 3. That there's no more important decision in life than who you marry.

5 Architecture

  • 1. Maybe we can show government how to operate better as a result of better architecture. Eventually I think Chicago will be the most beautiful great city left in the world.
  • 2. All real education is the architecture of the soul.
  • 3. All those involved in the construction of an architectural design from the architect to the builder have an attachment to the architecture although it's difficult to quantify the attachment.
