My parents had this relationship that was really terrifying. I mean the level of hatred that they had and the level of physical abuse – my mother would beat up my father basically – and I think I was drawn to images on television that were bright and reflective.

4 Anniversary

  • 3. The London games mark the 24th anniversary of my winning two golds and setting the world record in the heptathlon. Someone is going to want it records are made to be broken – it's only a matter of time. I hope mine will outlive me.

5 Architecture

  • 1. I got into this little habit of architecture and building. I designed a house in Colorado and one in Hawaii. The idea is supposed to be build and sell – but then I can never bring myself to sell them.
  • 2. Rome has not seen a modern building in more than half a century. It is a city frozen in time.
  • 3. The job of buildings is to improve human relations: architecture must ease them not make them worse.
