1 Age

  • 1. Canada has a passive-aggressive culture with a lot of sarcasm and righteousness. That went with my weird messianic complex. The ego is a fascinating monster. I was taught from a young age that I had to serve so that turned into me thinking I had to save the planet.
  • 2. You hit a certain age and – especially because of TV – the young cooks coming up say 'You're a sellout because you're doing something other than what you should be doing.' • 3. Writers obviously have to bear witness to the harsh face of the age.

2 Amazing

  • 1. My dream career would be to be in things that have real heart and are telling real stories but while doing that you're getting really big laughs. I don't necessarily love the straight crazy comedies. 'Caddyshack' is amazing but there's not a lot of new 'Caddyshack's.
  • 2. These things have a life of there own and never existed when I was growing up certainly worrying when one would get made. It's kind of amazing how that one movie kept living through all these years.
  • 3. My dream car would be a Maserati. That would be amazing.

3 Anger

  • 1. I really believe that all of us have a lot of darkness in our souls. Anger rage fear sadness. I don't think that's only reserved for people who have horrible upbringings. I think it really exists and is part of the human condition. I think in the course of your life you figure out ways to deal with that.
  • 2. To talk about balance it's easier to talk about what's out of balance. And I think anytime that you have any disease and disease meaning lack of ease lack of flow… dis-ease. So any time there's disease you're out of balance whether it's jealousy anger greed anxiety fear.
  • 3. The anger that Uncle Junior has comes from my background. My father was the son of an Italian immigrant and I've seen the fire of the Italian temperament. It can be explosive sometimes in ways that are both funny and tragic.

4 Anniversary

  • 1. Experts on romance say for a happy marriage there has to be more than a passionate love. For a lasting union they insist there must be a genuine liking for each other. Which in my book is a good definition for friendship.
  • 2. Married people from my generation are like an endangered species!
  • 3. Since I wrote to you last we have got our chapel beautifully lighted with gas and have had our anniversary.

5 Architecture

  • 1. Any architectural project we do takes at least four or five years so increasingly there is a discrepancy between the acceleration of culture and the continuing slowness of architecture.
  • 2. Of course I know very little about architecture and the older I get the less I know.
  • 3. Space has always been the spiritual dimension of architecture. It is not the physical statement of the structure so much as what it contains that moves us.
