Many a man will have the courage to die gallantly but will not have the courage to say or even to think that the cause for which he is asked to die is an unworthy one.
Two qualities are indispensable: first an intellect that even in the darkest hour retains some glimmerings of the inner light which leads to truth and second the courage to follow this faint light wherever it may lead.
