I've come to recognize what I call my 'inside interests.' Telling stories. And helping people tell their stories is a sort of interpersonal gardening. My work at NBC News was to report the news but in hindsight I often tried to look for some insight to share that might spark a moment of recognition in a viewer.

I loathe gardening but I love gardens and I have two beautiful gardens. I can not bear gardening but I love gardens.

1 Age

  • 1. I've lost touch with a lot of that boutique-type music just because of my age and raising my son and the multiple jobs I have at this point.
  • 2. My mother inspired me to treat others as I would want to be treated regardless of age race or financial status.
  • 3. Age is a terrible avenger. The lessons of life give you so much to work with but by the time you've got all this great wisdom you don't get to be young anymore.

2 Amazing

  • 1. I really enjoyed being Peppy Miller. She was an amazing character and her energy followed me everywhere. When I talk about her I want to be her again.
  • 2. I've always been fascinated with the juxtaposition of technology in music not only in recording but in the keyboard. It's amazing the way you can apply technology to an art form.

3 Anger

  • 1. It's usually a big kind of vent of frustration or anger or sadness that puts me in the right frame of mind to write. It's such a cliche to say that artists write when they're down but it's true for me. It's a relief to get out what's eating away at my heart or my soul or my head.
  • 2. Never contend with a man who has nothing to lose.
  • 3. There's a lot of bitterness there's a lot of anger out there. We all have to work hard to heal those wounds.

4 Anniversary

  • 1. Why does a woman work ten years to change a man's habits and then complain that he's not the man she married?
  • 2. I did that Dior Couture 60th anniversary show in July. It took so long to get ready I think I would have rather been watching.
  • 3. More marriages might survive if the partners realized that sometimes the better comes after the worse.

5 Architecture

  • 1. Nothing requires the architect's care more than the due proportions of buildings.
  • 2. Japanese architecture is very much copied in this country and in Europe.
  • 3. It's my goal to make a building as immaterial as possible. Architecture is a very material thing. It takes a lot of resources so why not eliminate what you don't need as long as you're able to achieve the same result?
