I've come to recognize what I call my 'inside interests.' Telling stories. And helping people tell their stories is a sort of interpersonal gardening. My work at NBC News was to report the news but in hindsight I often tried to look for some insight to share that might spark a moment of recognition in a viewer.

I loathe gardening but I love gardens and I have two beautiful gardens. I can not bear gardening but I love gardens.

1 Age

  • 1. It's only at this age that I can say the word 'art' without flinching.
  • 2. My habit would have been to veer towards the dark – to prove I was something edgy or maybe to prove that I was cognisant of the dark side. Now with age and confidence I can say yeah that's true but I am cognisant of the fact that people can do things well. And can be more loving than you expect.
  • 3. Situational unawareness in the private marketplace or on the battlefield will cost you your livelihood or your life. In the Age of Obama however such willful ignorance is a job prerequisite. The less you know the better.

2 Amazing

  • 1. That's an amazing feeling to walk onstage and you're not thinking about anything you're not thinking about your lines or what you're supposed to do – your body your brain knows so there's freedom. There's not fear there's not nerves.
  • 2. It's amazing how quickly people on the internet can pick something up but it's also amazing how quickly they can drop it.
  • 3. We're all doing different things and some of the girls are mums so priorities have changed. But I would love to do something with the Spice Girls again. I know we would have an amazing time.

3 Anger

  • 1. Acting in anger and hatred throughout my life I frequently precipitated what I feared most the loss of friendships and the need to rely upon the very people I'd abused.

4 Anniversary

  • 1. I feel there should have been some recognition of the Spice Girls at this year's 25th anniversary. We flew the flag for Britain around the globe in the 1990s and we achieved a hell of a lot.
  • 2. Last week the House of Representatives passed a resolution honoring the victims and heroes of September 11th. As we commemorate the anniversary of 9-11 we must also remember that the threat is still very real today.
  • 3. I think you have to be willing to take a bullet for somebody if you're going to stand up there take your vows and be married to them for the rest of your life.

5 Architecture

  • 1. Architecture is not an inspirational business it's a rational procedure to do sensible and hopefully beautiful things that's all.
  • 2. Every one who has a heart however ignorant of architecture he may be feels the transcendent beauty and poetry of the mediaeval churches.
  • 3. I mean certainly writing painting photography dance architecture there is an aspect of almost every art form that is useful and that merges into film in some way.
