In The Touch the love scenes are the same as they were in The Thorn Birds or anything else I've ever written. I find a way of saying that either it was heaven or hell but in a way that still leaves room for the reader to use their own imagination.

2 Amazing

  • 1. I've had some amazing people in my life. Look at my father – he came from a small fishing village of five hundred people and at six foot four with giant ears and a kind of very odd expression thought he could be a movie star. So go figure you know?

3 Anger

  • 1. So many women keep their anger inside and let it build until they explode and then people blow them off again.
  • 2. It's usually a big kind of vent of frustration or anger or sadness that puts me in the right frame of mind to write. It's such a cliche to say that artists write when they're down but it's true for me. It's a relief to get out what's eating away at my heart or my soul or my head.
  • 3. Deep down my mom had long suspected I was gay… Much of her anger and hurt came from her sense of betrayal that she was the last to be told.

4 Anniversary

  • 1. Marriage is an alliance entered into by a man who can't sleep with the window shut and a woman who can't sleep with the window open.
  • 2. Chains do not hold a marriage together. It is threads hundreds of tiny threads which sew people together through the years.
  • 3. My last trip to New Orleans was for the fifth anniversary of Katrina and I had the awesome opportunity to bring my family down. We all worked on a house together and met some of the families.

5 Architecture

  • 1. The intellectual architecture means focusing on doing great work instead of focusing on agency politics.
  • 2. I'm often called an old-fashioned modernist. But the modernists had the absurd idea that architecture could heal the world. That's impossible. And today nobody expects architects to have these grand visions any more.
  • 3. My passion and great enjoyment for architecture and the reason the older I get the more I enjoy it is because I believe we – architects – can effect the quality of life of the people.
