I didn't watch much TV as a kid and I don' t watch it now. I don' t find anything beautiful or unique to the medium and the only thing you can do on TV that you can't do in film is make a continuing story – which is so cool!
I've never been one of the cool people at school but then again I don't get the people who are cool. It's not that I don't like them it's just that they don't interest me.

My problem was that I was blond. There were no heroes with blond hair. Robert Taylor and Henry Fonda they all had dark hair. The only one I found was Van Johnson who wasn't too cool. He was a nice homely American boy. So I created my own image. It worked.
