The first book I wrote was The Bride Price which was a romantic book but my husband burnt the book when he saw it. I was the typical African woman I'd done this privately I wanted him to look at it approve it and he said he wouldn't read it.

In the West audiences think I am a stereotyped action star or that I always play hitmen or killers. But in Hong Kong I did a lot of comedy many dramatic films and most of all romantic roles lots of love stories. I was like a romance novel hero.

  • 1. I figured out it was a social thing what women were allowed to do. At a very young age I decided I was not going to follow women's rules.
  • 2. I've had two romances since moving to Las Vegas. One was with somebody 12 years older than me and the other was the same age and neither worked out. I know people still think of me as one of Hugh Hefner's girlfriends and he of course was much older than me but that was a whole different lifestyle and a different kind of dating.

2 Amazing

  • 1. I thought after the Pulitzer at least nothing will surprise me quite that much in my life. And another one happened. It was quite amazing.
  • 2. I will always be the way I was a couple years ago before anything happened. And that's to my parents' credit my amazing parents who have been around me my whole life and raised me right. I'm very happy with what has happened so far.
  • 3. My dad was a journalist. He was in Rwanda right after the genocide. In Berlin when the wall came down. He was always disappearing and coming back with amazing stories. So telling stories for a living made sense to me.

3 Anger

  • 1. Speak when you are angry and you will make the best speech you will ever regret.
  • 2. Lawyers are men who hire out their words and anger.
  • 3. It's usually a big kind of vent of frustration or anger or sadness that puts me in the right frame of mind to write. It's such a cliche to say that artists write when they're down but it's true for me. It's a relief to get out what's eating away at my heart or my soul or my head.

4 Anniversary

  • 1. See the 'On the Road' that came out in 1957 was censored. A lot of the honesty of it the bitter honesty is in the original scroll version that came out in 2007 on the 50-year anniversary. Back then there was so much post-Second World War fear that was imposed on everybody – 'You must live life this way' – and these guys were bored.
  • 2. A wedding anniversary is the celebration of love trust partnership tolerance and tenacity. The order varies for any given year.
  • 3. Mr. Speaker I rise today to recognize the Peace Corps as it reached its 45th anniversary on March 1 2006.
