The fact that we are I don't know how many millions of people yet communication complete communication is completely impossible between two of those people is to me one of the biggest tragic themes in the world.

People break down after a couple of hours. All the defenses go down and there's a kind of communication that if I spent 20 years in a living room with one of these people I would never never know as much about them as I do in that one day.

It's about communication. It's about honesty. It's about treating people in the organization as deserving to know the facts. You don't try to give them half the story. You don't try to hide the story. You treat them as – as true equals and you communicate and you communicate and communicate.

Strange about parents. We have such easy access to them and such daunting problems of communication.

  • 1. Few women I fear have had such reason as I have to think the long sad years of youth were worth living for the sake of middle age.

2 Amazing

  • 1. The overall physical demand that Iraq has is pretty amazing. It's 130 degrees and the soldiers are carrying about 100 pounds of extra gear. It's a pretty rigorous schedule and routine for them.
  • 2. I don't think immortality is necessarily the key to understanding the world. You have to be careful with what you think you're achieving. I'm all for science discovering amazing and fantastic things about our world but I think the motivations behind it are slightly askew.
  • 3. At the New York Athletic Club they serve amazing food. People go there get healthy and then eat themselves to death – which is I suppose the right way to do it.

3 Anger

  • 1. Anger is the most impotent of passions. It effects nothing it goes about and hurts the one who is possessed by it more than the one against whom it is directed.
  • 2. I use the music to vent and a lot of the stuff that I am writing about or was writing about contained a lot of anger and anxiety stress and depression so that's how the album came out so dark.
  • 3. The great thing about celebrity culture is that they can't seem to stop themselves from displaying their ridiculous behaviour. I feel it's my job as a serious investigative journalist to witness all kinds of behaviour and then report back to the audience through the prism of my own anger and bitterness.

4 Anniversary

  • 1. I've been in love with the same woman for forty-one years. If my wife finds out she'll kill me.
  • 2. The London games mark the 24th anniversary of my winning two golds and setting the world record in the heptathlon. Someone is going to want it records are made to be broken – it's only a matter of time. I hope mine will outlive me.

5 Architecture

  • 1. The logic of Palladian architecture presented an aesthetic formula which could be applied universally.
