The fact that we are I don't know how many millions of people yet communication complete communication is completely impossible between two of those people is to me one of the biggest tragic themes in the world.

People break down after a couple of hours. All the defenses go down and there's a kind of communication that if I spent 20 years in a living room with one of these people I would never never know as much about them as I do in that one day.

It's about communication. It's about honesty. It's about treating people in the organization as deserving to know the facts. You don't try to give them half the story. You don't try to hide the story. You treat them as – as true equals and you communicate and you communicate and communicate.

Strange about parents. We have such easy access to them and such daunting problems of communication.

1 Age

  • 1. I never quite toed the line. I was a bit disruptive. All my early school reports from the age of 5 were 'Daniel must learn not to distract others.' And now that's what I do for a living.
  • 2. I was well motivated. What I wanted to do was work for myself. I had twenty two jobs before I started my business at the age of twenty three and I didn't want one more boss telling me what to do. So I was motivated simply because I didn't want a boss.
  • 3. Age puzzles me. I thought it was a quiet time. My seventies were interesting and fairly serene but my eighties are passionate. I grow more intense as I age.

2 Amazing

  • 1. It's amazing what ordinary people can do if they set out without preconceived notions.
  • 2. It is pretty amazing. My parents who came from Nicaragua to the U.S. – who would have thought that they would have American kids on the Olympic team? I think that's the epitome of the Olympic dream.
  • 3. Science is one of a handful of things that defines us as a very special species. It is amazing how far we have been able to get and how accurate our predictions are. I think understanding how the universe was born is very important. It really gives us a perspective on many things.

3 Anger

  • 1. The fear really hits you. That's what you feel first. And then it's the anger and frustration. Part of the problem is how little we understand about the ultimate betrayal of the body when it rebels against itself.
  • 2. Anger may repast with thee for an hour but not repose for a night the continuance of anger is hatred the continuance of hatred turns malice.
  • 3. Generalised anger and frustration is something that gets you in the studio and gets you to work – though it's not necessarily evident in anything that's finished.

4 Anniversary

  • 1. The day before the anniversary of D-Day we lost a man who was equaled by few and surpassed by none as a leader in the cause of freedom: Ronald Reagan.
  • 2. You marry somebody you love everything about them. You grow to learn about them. You never learn everything.
  • 3. We had a relationship that lasted 44 years. Herbert and I lived together 10 years before we were married. He always gave me a little heart for whatever anniversary.

5 Architecture

  • 1. Every man's work whether it be literature or music or pictures or architecture or anything else is always a portrait of himself.
  • 2. I see architecture not as Gropius did as a moral venture as truth but as invention in the same way that poetry or music or painting is invention.
