The fact that we are I don't know how many millions of people yet communication complete communication is completely impossible between two of those people is to me one of the biggest tragic themes in the world.

People break down after a couple of hours. All the defenses go down and there's a kind of communication that if I spent 20 years in a living room with one of these people I would never never know as much about them as I do in that one day.

It's about communication. It's about honesty. It's about treating people in the organization as deserving to know the facts. You don't try to give them half the story. You don't try to hide the story. You treat them as – as true equals and you communicate and you communicate and communicate.

Strange about parents. We have such easy access to them and such daunting problems of communication.

1 Age

  • 1. The one thing that unites all human beings regardless of age gender religion or ethnic background is that we all believe we are above-average drivers.
  • 2. I'm at peace with myself and where I am. In the past I was always looking to see how everybody else was doing. I wasn't competitive I was comparative. I just wanted to be where everybody else was. Now I've gotten to an age when I am not comparing anymore.
  • 3. I want to be part of the resurgence of things that are tangible beautiful and soulful rather than just give in to the digital age. But when I talk to people about this they just say 'Yeah I know what you mean ' and stare at their mobiles.

2 Amazing

  • 1. With love you should go ahead and take the risk of getting hurt because love is an amazing feeling.
  • 2. When the shriveled skin of the ordinary is stuffed out with meaning it satisfies the senses amazingly.
  • 3. It's amazing to me that in the 42 years since President Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act into law women today still receive fewer wages than men for the same work.

3 Anger

  • 1. We should meet abuse by forbearance. Human nature is so constituted that if we take absolutely no notice of anger or abuse the person indulging in it will soon weary of it and stop.
  • 2. How much more grievous are the consequences of anger than the causes of it.
  • 3. I don't think I could play a character that I couldn't relate to somehow. I'm not unfamiliar with frustration anger shame helplessness and a load of other emotions that make up our psycho-soup. I try to focus on that frustration that sense of unfairness and multiply it.

4 Anniversary

  • 1. Chains do not hold a marriage together. It is threads hundreds of tiny threads which sew people together through the years.
  • 2. I feel there should have been some recognition of the Spice Girls at this year's 25th anniversary. We flew the flag for Britain around the globe in the 1990s and we achieved a hell of a lot.
  • 3. Experts on romance say for a happy marriage there has to be more than a passionate love. For a lasting union they insist there must be a genuine liking for each other. Which in my book is a good definition for friendship.

5 Architecture

  • 1. In any architecture there is an equity between the pragmatic function and the symbolic function.
  • 2. If I have a style I am not aware of it.
  • 3. That Moorish architecture is all over the place of course. It affects me everywhere I see it as it does so many people. But Brand Library was a special place to me and I know I've paid homage to it many times in my drawings.
