The rest of the world cares about how we conduct our affairs because they then take that lead. We're the only leader in the world today. Some are wishing us well others think that we're down and are not going to get back up again but they are all watching with great interest to see how we conduct our business over the next couple of years.

  • 1. To write a story about New York that only deals with people in your age and socioeconomic bracket that feels dishonest to me. So much of New York comes from everyone bumping into each other.
  • 2. Part of the reason I sort of shot out like a cannon out of Michigan and left home at such an early age is because I had to feel independent.
  • 3. By age seven I used to comb my hair for performances just pull my hair up into a bun. Granted it wasn't a very intricate hairstyle. Still to be that responsible and disciplined at age seven is unusual.

2 Amazing

  • 1. I would love to work with Paolo Nutini because he is so soulful and an amazing songwriter.
  • 2. When you write biographies whether it's about Ben Franklin or Einstein you discover something amazing: They are human.
  • 3. George Clooney is a super-human he's just such an amazing human being he taught me how to be a better person and a better actor!

3 Anger

  • 1. I was shocked at the anger toward me.
  • 2. I drank for about 25 years getting over the loss of my father and I took the anger out on myself. I did a good job at beating myself up at sometimes. I don't drink anymore but my alcoholic head occasionally says different. 'Nil By Mouth' was a love letter to my father because I needed to resolve some issues in order to be able to forgive him.
  • 3. I'm generally quite an angry person and I like to channel my anger toward something creative.

4 Anniversary

  • 1. The London games mark the 24th anniversary of my winning two golds and setting the world record in the heptathlon. Someone is going to want it records are made to be broken – it's only a matter of time. I hope mine will outlive me.
  • 2. Why does a woman work ten years to change a man's habits and then complain that he's not the man she married?
  • 3. My mother and stepfather were married 43 years so I have watched a long marriage. I feel like I had a very good role model for that. And you know it's just a number.

5 Architecture

  • 1. I think architecture has to be a gift.
  • 2. Architecture tends to consume everything else it has become one's entire life.
  • 3. Maybe we can show government how to operate better as a result of better architecture. Eventually I think Chicago will be the most beautiful great city left in the world.
