This is just what I have thought when I have seen slaves at work – they seem to go through the motions of labor without putting strength into them. They keep their powers in reserve for their own use at night perhaps.

The only reason I would stay away from a period piece is because sometimes the women are painted in a very stereotypical weakling wallflower way – that's something I don't want to do. I want to show strength in the women I play and a journey of some sort.

Death used to announce itself in the thick of life but now people drag on so long it sometimes seems that we are reaching the stage when we may have to announce ourselves to death. It is as though one needs a special strength to die and not a final weakness.

The strength of the United States is not the gold at Fort Knox or the weapons of mass destruction that we have but the sum total of the education and the character of our people.

  • 1. I was taught from a young age that many people would treat me as a second-class citizen because I was African-American and because I was female.
  • 2. English people don't have very good diction. In France you have to pronounce very particularly and clearly and learning French at an early age helped me enormously.
  • 3. We incorporated new tastes and flavors into our kids' diets from a very early age which helped to develop their palates and prevented them from becoming picky eaters. We don't buy junk food and give them options of fresh fruit yogurt raw almonds or dried whole grain cereals for snack time.

2 Amazing

  • 1. I'll watch a Pixar movie over and over and over again. I'll be with friends of mine who have kids that want to watch 'Finding Nemo ' and I'm like 'Yeah okay let's watch 'Nemo' again for the seven billionth time! ' because they're amazing movies.
  • 2. I think Paul Newman had an amazing career. I also love what Tom Hanks has done. He has always made very grounded movies that have something to say. He has found a way to make blockbusters that are about something and that is what I want to do.

3 Anger

4 Anniversary

  • 1. Experts on romance say for a happy marriage there has to be more than a passionate love. For a lasting union they insist there must be a genuine liking for each other. Which in my book is a good definition for friendship.
  • 2. Next month I will celebrate my 30th anniversary of marriage with my beautiful bride Vicki. Our marriage has been a blessing. I have gained even more respect for the institution over the past 3 decades and will defend it against attack.
  • 3. On this important anniversary we must remember that while we have come a long way in eliminating barriers critical work remains to ensure all Americans can live up to their full potential.

5 Architecture

  • 1. I would fix other people's lines if they asked me on occasion. The hard part of writing is the architecture of it getting the story and structuring it. Not the tweaking of lines.
  • 2. In my early 20s I was so miserable doing construction I wanted something that paid money. I liked nice stuff. I liked cars and architecture and things that cost money. I wanted to not swing a hammer and make money… and not do stuff that was dirty. I attempted to get into comedy. I started to do stand-up but I wasn't very good at it.
  • 3. If architecture is frozen music then music must be liquid architecture.
