  • 1. I hate the idea that you shouldn't wear something just because you're a certain age.
  • 2. We tried not to age but time had its rage.
  • 3. The young people have MTV and rock and roll. Why would they go to read poetry? Poetry belongs to the Stone Age. It awakens in us perceptions that go back to those times.

2 Amazing

  • 1. The amazing thing now is that most of those so-called critics who were telling me to find my own voice seem to have lost theirs.
  • 2. I was interested in transcendence from a very early age. I was interested in what was over there what was behind life. So when I had my first communion I was very disappointed. I had expected something amazing and surprising and spiritual. Instead all I got was a bicycle. That wasn't what I was after at all.
  • 3. To go to the Oscars for Moneyball – that was pretty amazing. And to be able to go work with Kathryn Bigelow – that's going to be pretty sweet. Hopefully I don't have to go back to being a waiter. That's still my main goal.

3 Anger

  • 1. It absolutely helped – to write the father in both 'Juicy' and 'Beasts ' I had to see the whole story from his point of view. All of a sudden I understood more of what my own father must be going through – the fear the frustration the anger… the hope that he'll leave a legacy.
  • 2. Never do anything when you are in a temper for you will do everything wrong.
  • 3. Fantastic tyrant of the amorous heart. How hard thy yoke how cruel thy dart. Those escape your anger who refuse your sway and those are punished most who most obey.

4 Anniversary

  • 1. I was always very grateful to 'em and am grateful to 'em now. I went back a couple of years ago and did their 20th anniversary show. But the longer I stayed on Hee Haw the worse things got for me musically.
  • 2. Some people ask the secret of our long marriage. We take time to go to a restaurant two times a week. A little candlelight dinner soft music and dancing. She goes Tuesdays I go Fridays.
  • 3. I didn't make my first solo record until 1981 so I don't have any 60's or 70's recordings but I am working on a large boxed set called DUST to be released next year the 20th anniversary of my first solo record.

5 Architecture

  • 1. Chicago is known for good steaks expensive stores and beautiful architecture. Unfortunately the Windy City also enjoys a reputation for corrupt politics violent crime and some of the strictest gun control laws anywhere in the country.
  • 2. Art is very tricky because it's what you do for yourself. It's much harder for me to make those works than the monuments or the architecture.
  • 3. The building of the architecture of a novel – the craft of it – is something I never tire of.
