I usually write for the individual reader -though I would like to have many such readers. There are some poets who write for people assembled in big rooms so they can live through something collectively. I prefer my reader to take my poem and have a one-on-one relationship with it.

'Dallas' hit a chord back in the late Seventies and Eighties because it was the age of greed: here you have this unapologetic character who is mean and nasty and ruthless and does it all with an evil grin. I think people related to JR back then because we all have someone we know exactly like him. Everyone in the world knows a JR.
  • 2. Even truth needs to be clad in new garments if it is to appeal to a new age.
  • 3. We have entered an age in which education is not just a luxury permitting some men an advantage over others. It has become a necessity without which a person is defenseless in this complex industrialized society. We have truly entered the century of the educated man.

2 Amazing

  • 1. The strangest thing that human speech and human writing can do is create a metaphor. That is an amazing leap is it not?
  • 2. It's amazing if you know what you want to say how fast it is to write.
  • 3. Going to a concert can sometimes be very difficult. It can be a long journey. There's the ticket prices. But when the music goes to the community – not the community coming to the concert – they say 'Wow! I didn't know that this music was so amazing!'

3 Anger

  • 1. In high school I dated a white woman. She would come to visit me on the rez. And her dad who was very racist didn't like that at all. And he told her one time 'You shouldn't go on the rez if you're white because Indians have a lot of anger in their heart.'
  • 2. Quite a lot of our contemporary culture is actually shot through with a resentment of limits and the passage of time anger at what we can't do fear or even disgust at growing old.
  • 3. As a system of philosophy it is not like the Tower of Babel so daring its high aim as to seek a shelter against God's anger but it is like a pyramid poised on its apex.

4 Anniversary

  • 1. That there's no more important decision in life than who you marry.
  • 2. This anniversary serves to help remind the American people that in the wake of one of the greatest political scandals and misuse of power in our history as a nation scandal produced important reforms that served this nation well for two decades.
  • 3. Presently the Commission for Commemorating 350 Years of American Jewish History has been brought about to encourage and sponsor a variety of historical activities that advance our understanding of the American Jewish experience as it marks this milestone anniversary.

5 Architecture

  • 1. There will never be great architects or great architecture without great patrons.
  • 2. But I feel truly wowed by the architecture and the meaning of the architecture if you get lost in it and think about the man hours in the smallest little chapel and the love involved. God it's fantastic.
  • 3. I don't build in order to have clients. I have clients in order to build.
