My birth neither shook the German Empire nor caused much of an upheaval in the home. It pleased mother caused father a certain amount of pride and my elder brother the usual fraternal jealousy of a hitherto only son.

That's one of the reasons I moved to Florida. Of course the main reason is the weather and the training. But there's more jealousy in Switzerland because it's so little and they don't have so many athletes.

1 Age

  • 1. Right up until the time I retired at age 37 I felt like there were still things that I could do better.
  • 2. I was always obsessed with being famous. I had Marilyn Monroe paper dolls as a child and I was always obsessed with her. I've just been really driven in that direction and none of my friends were. So I don't know what put that bug in me at a young age.
  • 3. Over the years Woodstock got glorified and romanticised and became the event that symbolised Utopia. It's the last page of our collective memory of the age of innocence. Then things turned ugly and would never be the same again.

2 Amazing

  • 1. You go through at least the first two years of Star Trek and you find some amazing stuff. Everything that was going on Gene put into the series. He just put strange costumes on the actors and painted them funny colours and left the same situation in.
  • 2. What an amazing opportunity to do something like direct a movie and step out of your creative comfort zone and yet do something that is also so familiar at the same time. I was also just excited to have the chance to direct which I may never get to do again.
  • 3. I like making pies. I have a bunch of fruit trees in my backyard. My loquat tree sprouted and I like making loquat pie. They're really hard to peel and everything and it took me forever but they make the best pies. They're amazing.

3 Anger

  • 1. I'm an angry person angrier than most people would imagine I get flashes of anger. What works for me is working out when it's useful to use that anger.
  • 2. The poor monkey quietly seated on the ground seemed to be in sore trouble at this display of anger.
  • 3. Deep down my mom had long suspected I was gay… Much of her anger and hurt came from her sense of betrayal that she was the last to be told.

4 Anniversary

  • 3. I feel there should have been some recognition of the Spice Girls at this year's 25th anniversary. We flew the flag for Britain around the globe in the 1990s and we achieved a hell of a lot.

5 Architecture

  • 1. Rationalism is the enemy of art though necessary as a basis for architecture.
  • 2. My interest in architecture has always been sculptural. Most of my photography is of architecture.
