  • 1. I wanted to be a teacher. I love children so I wanted to deal with children. Then I wanted to be a veterinarian. But by the age of ten or eleven when I opened my mouth and said 'Oh God what's this?' I kind of knew teaching and being a veterinarian were gonna have to wait.
  • 2. I've an enormous respect for my mother who at the age of 39 raised three children and I grew up with my grandmother in the household. And so it was a really strong household of women – my poor brother! It was great growing up with so many generations of women.

2 Amazing

  • 1. I think Nina Simone has had an amazing journey. She was spicy and she had attitude and she didn't care she wanted her money in a paper bag and don't mess with me and I've been doing some research on that so.
  • 2. It's amazing that no matter how much money you have you can make some bad decisions and in five months you're on the street begging.
  • 3. That's double-edged: it's amazing that they're bringing me in and showing people new ideas and at the same time it's a little hard because seventy percent of the time or even higher I'm not going to get those roles.

3 Anger

  • 1. When I was younger I was terrified to express anger because it would often kick-start a horrible reaction in the men in my life. So I bit my tongue. I was left to painstakingly deal with the aftermath of my avoidance later in life in therapy or through the lyrics of my songs.
  • 2. What influenced me was Tori Amos who was unapologetic about expressing anger through music and Sinead O'Connor. Those two in particular were really moving for me and very inspiring before I wrote 'Jagged Little Pill.'
  • 3. I love each and every one of you but like my own family you thrill you frustrate you anger.

4 Anniversary

  • 1. I was always very grateful to 'em and am grateful to 'em now. I went back a couple of years ago and did their 20th anniversary show. But the longer I stayed on Hee Haw the worse things got for me musically.
  • 2. I feel there should have been some recognition of the Spice Girls at this year's 25th anniversary. We flew the flag for Britain around the globe in the 1990s and we achieved a hell of a lot.
  • 3. See the 'On the Road' that came out in 1957 was censored. A lot of the honesty of it the bitter honesty is in the original scroll version that came out in 2007 on the 50-year anniversary. Back then there was so much post-Second World War fear that was imposed on everybody – 'You must live life this way' – and these guys were bored.

5 Architecture

  • 1. An architect's most useful tools are an eraser at the drafting board and a wrecking bar at the site.
  • 2. Architecture has recorded the great ideas of the human race. Not only every religious symbol but every human thought has its page in that vast book.
  • 3. I am but an architectural composer.
