Apathy can be overcome by enthusiasm and enthusiasm can only be aroused by two things: first an ideal with takes the imagination by storm and second a definite intelligible plan for carrying that ideal into practice.
However my parents – both of whom came from impoverished backgrounds and neither of whom had been to college took the view that my overactive imagination was an amusing quirk that would never pay a mortgage or secure a pension.
