1 Age

  • 1. I was apprehensive. I feared every time I talked about poetry it would be filtered through the lens of race sex and age.
  • 2. If you've got to my age you've probably had your heart broken many times. So it's not that difficult to unpack a bit of grief from some little corner of your heart and cry over it.

2 Amazing

  • 1. My dad was a journalist. He was in Rwanda right after the genocide. In Berlin when the wall came down. He was always disappearing and coming back with amazing stories. So telling stories for a living made sense to me.
  • 2. One of the most amazing locations I've ever been is the top of the volcano in Tanzania Africa. It's an actual volcano where you really have this lava every day.
  • 3. I'm so happy to have been a part of that process and I would go straight back into the desert in a ton of chain mail for Ridley any day of the week. He's an amazing director and I can't wait to see the long version.

3 Anger

  • 1. If a small thing has the power to make you angry does that not indicate something about your size?
  • 2. I think that Scottish people like Canadians are often misunderstood and what I like about my Scottish friends and relatives is how quickly it can go from love to anger. It's a great dynamic.
  • 3. It's usually a big kind of vent of frustration or anger or sadness that puts me in the right frame of mind to write. It's such a cliche to say that artists write when they're down but it's true for me. It's a relief to get out what's eating away at my heart or my soul or my head.

4 Anniversary

  • 1. See the 'On the Road' that came out in 1957 was censored. A lot of the honesty of it the bitter honesty is in the original scroll version that came out in 2007 on the 50-year anniversary. Back then there was so much post-Second World War fear that was imposed on everybody – 'You must live life this way' – and these guys were bored.
  • 2. Next month I will celebrate my 30th anniversary of marriage with my beautiful bride Vicki. Our marriage has been a blessing. I have gained even more respect for the institution over the past 3 decades and will defend it against attack.
  • 3. On July 18 we will mark the 12th anniversary of the senseless loss of 85 lives in the bombing of the Jewish Cultural Center in Buenos Aires Argentina.

5 Architecture

  • 1. The interior of the house personifies the private world the exterior of it is part of the outside world.
  • 2. Vitality is radiated from exceptional art and architecture.
  • 3. I don't find Hollywood interesting so I'm thinking of studying architecture instead.
