I've come to recognize what I call my 'inside interests.' Telling stories. And helping people tell their stories is a sort of interpersonal gardening. My work at NBC News was to report the news but in hindsight I often tried to look for some insight to share that might spark a moment of recognition in a viewer.

I loathe gardening but I love gardens and I have two beautiful gardens. I can not bear gardening but I love gardens.

2 Amazing

  • 1. In the past few years we've been doing amazing stuff with desserts. Pastry chefs have been using herbs and spices in their desserts. So vanilla cake doesn't have to be just vanilla it can have a little thyme. Or you could have a custard with a little lavender in it which is just amazing.
  • 2. I don't think immortality is necessarily the key to understanding the world. You have to be careful with what you think you're achieving. I'm all for science discovering amazing and fantastic things about our world but I think the motivations behind it are slightly askew.
  • 3. What you know about the people whom you know at all well is truly amazing even though you have never formulated it.

3 Anger

  • 1. Fair peace becomes men ferocious anger belongs to beasts.
  • 2. Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else you are the one who gets burned.
  • 3. My heart has been heavy and I have deliberated within my own conscience knowing that my decision should not come out of my initial emotion of anger toward the President for such reckless behavior but should be based on the facts.

4 Anniversary

  • 1. I have for some time urged that a nuclear abolition summit to mark the effective end of the nuclear era be convened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki on the 70th anniversary of the bombings of those cities with the participation of national leaders and representatives of global civil society.
  • 2. I didn't make my first solo record until 1981 so I don't have any 60's or 70's recordings but I am working on a large boxed set called DUST to be released next year the 20th anniversary of my first solo record.
  • 3. Marriage is an alliance entered into by a man who can't sleep with the window shut and a woman who can't sleep with the window open.

5 Architecture

  • 1. I see architecture not as Gropius did as a moral venture as truth but as invention in the same way that poetry or music or painting is invention.
  • 2. The aesthetic of architecture has to be rooted in a broader idea about human activities like walking relaxing and communicating. Architecture thinks about how these activities can be given added value.
  • 3. Organic architecture seeks superior sense of use and a finer sense of comfort expressed in organic simplicity.
