My desire to curtail undue freedom of speech extends only to such public areas as restaurants airports streets hotel lobbies parks and department stores. Verbal exchanges between consenting adults in private are as of little interest to me as they probably are to them.

  • 1. I saw how many people were poor and how many kids my age went to school hungry in the morning which I don't think most of my contemporaries in racially segregated schools in the South thought very much about at the time.

2 Amazing

  • 1. If you're writing you're starting in private. It can really be this amazing private freeing experience. Forget that it's for other people – that comes in later.
  • 2. I think what's really amazing is that given the scale of the web and getting the compute power we have today we're starting to see things that appear intelligent but actually aren't semantically intelligent.
  • 3. It's odd because I used to see pictures on telly or wherever of what I now know to be Shaftesbury Avenue and I used to wonder what that amazing street with all the lights was. Well now I know. I think when you get a wee taste of something it maybe isn't what you thought it was.

3 Anger

  • 1. In high school I dated a white woman. She would come to visit me on the rez. And her dad who was very racist didn't like that at all. And he told her one time 'You shouldn't go on the rez if you're white because Indians have a lot of anger in their heart.'
  • 2. Words can be said in bitterness and anger and often there seems to be an element of truth in the nastiness. And words don't go away they just echo around.
  • 3. A wonderful emotion to get things moving when one is stuck is anger. It was anger more than anything else that had set me off roused me into productivity and creativity.

4 Anniversary

  • 1. I have for some time urged that a nuclear abolition summit to mark the effective end of the nuclear era be convened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki on the 70th anniversary of the bombings of those cities with the participation of national leaders and representatives of global civil society.
  • 2. I think you have to be willing to take a bullet for somebody if you're going to stand up there take your vows and be married to them for the rest of your life.
  • 3. My mother and stepfather were married 43 years so I have watched a long marriage. I feel like I had a very good role model for that. And you know it's just a number.
