1 Age

  • 1. As winter strips the leaves from around us so that we may see the distant regions they formerly concealed so old age takes away our enjoyments only to enlarge the prospect of the coming eternity.
  • 2. The age thing really bugs me. Do people have more of a right to not like what I say because I'm 19?
  • 3. Why do people talk of the horrors of old age? It's great. I feel like a fine old car with the parts gradually wearing out but I'm not complaining … Those who find growing old terrible are people who haven't done what they wanted with their lives.

2 Amazing

  • 1. I think Paul Newman had an amazing career. I also love what Tom Hanks has done. He has always made very grounded movies that have something to say. He has found a way to make blockbusters that are about something and that is what I want to do.
  • 2. Surfing is such an amazing concept. You're taking on Nature with a little stick and saying 'I'm gonna ride you!' And a lot of times Nature says 'No you're not!' and crashes you to the bottom.
  • 3. I'd love to work with Sufjan Stevens. He so gets it. He's amazing.

3 Anger

  • 1. It's usually a big kind of vent of frustration or anger or sadness that puts me in the right frame of mind to write. It's such a cliche to say that artists write when they're down but it's true for me. It's a relief to get out what's eating away at my heart or my soul or my head.
  • 2. Fear is the only true enemy born of ignorance and the parent of anger and hate.
  • 3. Every time you get angry you poison your own system.

4 Anniversary

  • 1. The London games mark the 24th anniversary of my winning two golds and setting the world record in the heptathlon. Someone is going to want it records are made to be broken – it's only a matter of time. I hope mine will outlive me.
  • 2. The chances of a reunion now are less likely. I was thinking of having a 40th anniversary of the band but now they are really another band so it's all a bit weird.
  • 3. Marriage is an alliance entered into by a man who can't sleep with the window shut and a woman who can't sleep with the window open.

5 Architecture

  • 1. In art or architecture your project is only done when you say it's done. If you want to rip it apart at the eleventh hour and start all over again you never finish. I was one of those crazy creatures.
  • 2. And when an architect has designed a house with large windows which is a necessity today in order to pull the daylight into these very deep houses then curtains come to play a big role in architecture.
  • 3. Buildings should serve people not the other way around.
