2 Amazing

  • 1. You know 'The Golden Girls' was a very unusual show to start on. I was young and it was a show about old people and it was a very traditional show but it was also an amazing training ground for a joke-writer. It forced me to learn those skills.
  • 2. My time at Honda was amazing. Some of my best times in Formula One actually. I might not have won races just one race but I had a lot of fun.

3 Anger

  • 1. It is wise to direct your anger towards problems – not people to focus your energies on answers – not excuses.
  • 2. In general I was a good kid. It usually took a lot to make me mad. But once I reached the boiling point I lost all rational control. Totally without thinking when my anger was aroused I grabbed the nearest brick rock or stick to bash someone. It was as if I had no conscious will in the matter.
  • 3. I drank for about 25 years getting over the loss of my father and I took the anger out on myself. I did a good job at beating myself up at sometimes. I don't drink anymore but my alcoholic head occasionally says different. 'Nil By Mouth' was a love letter to my father because I needed to resolve some issues in order to be able to forgive him.

4 Anniversary

  • 1. Each year on the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s birth America has the opportunity to reflect on our nation's progress towards the realization of his dream.
  • 2. This year as we celebrate the 230th anniversary of America's independence please remember the symbols that are sacred to this country. Fly Old Glory high and show your respect and admiration for this great nation and the values we hold dear.
  • 3. Since I wrote to you last we have got our chapel beautifully lighted with gas and have had our anniversary.

5 Architecture

  • 1. The British political system and the whole clapped out Westminster architecture and the language that we use about politics it's completely unsustainable. You either decide to be part of that transition to do something different. Or you cling to old certainties.
  • 2. Even though I build buildings and I pursue my architecture I pursue it as an artist. I deliberately keep a tiny studio. I don't want to be an architectural firm. I want to remain an artist.
  • 3. Not many architects have the luxury to reject significant things.
