Actually I didn't make the claim that Ruby follows the principle of least surprise. Someone felt the design of Ruby follows that philosophy so they started saying that. I didn't bring that up actually.

Acting isn't for me. I don't like being told what to do. I'm more interested in set design more visually driven.

Looking back video game design seems a natural fit although there was no such thing when I was growing up. I built a Tic-Tac-Toe playing machine in my teens which went up in smoke on the night it was scheduled to go to a science fair.

My background is in hardware design. I found hardware work to be a welcome change from thousands of hours of programming and that led to the designs you mentioned.

  • 1. I was well motivated. What I wanted to do was work for myself. I had twenty two jobs before I started my business at the age of twenty three and I didn't want one more boss telling me what to do. So I was motivated simply because I didn't want a boss.
  • 2. We pay when old for the excesses of youth.
  • 3. At an early age I started my own paper route. Once I saw how you could service people and do a good job and get paid for it I just wanted to be the best I could be in whatever I did.

2 Amazing

  • 1. If you're curious London's an amazing place.
  • 2. I'm from Naples. I was born in a poor neighborhood and I always in my heart felt like it would be amazing to be able to adopt a child from Naples. I could give someone the opportunity I had. I would love to give back in that way and pay it forward.
  • 3. 'Chasing Amy' was an amazing role but then after that I went and did 'Big Daddy' and you're the girlfriend or you're the best friend. I wasn't getting the Nicole Kidman roles.

3 Anger

  • 1. The components of anxiety stress fear and anger do not exist independently of you in the world. They simply do not exist in the physical world even though we talk about them as if they do.
  • 2. I think that Scottish people like Canadians are often misunderstood and what I like about my Scottish friends and relatives is how quickly it can go from love to anger. It's a great dynamic.
  • 3. I think my passion is misinterpreted as anger sometimes. And I don't think people are ready for the message that I'm delivering and delivering with a sense of violent love.

4 Anniversary

  • 1. The London games mark the 24th anniversary of my winning two golds and setting the world record in the heptathlon. Someone is going to want it records are made to be broken – it's only a matter of time. I hope mine will outlive me.
  • 2. Married people from my generation are like an endangered species!
  • 3. We are not the same persons this year as last nor are those we love. It is a happy chance if we changing continue to love a changed person.

5 Architecture

  • 1. I was a student at Columbia College actually in the Architecture school. Paul would drive in from Queens showing me these new songs. I can't remember us working it out.
  • 2. I loved logic math computer programming. I loved systems and logic approaches. And so I just figured architecture is this perfect combination.
  • 3. Yet for my part deeply as I am moved by the religious architecture of the Middle Ages I cannot honestly say that I ever felt the slightest emotion in any modern Gothic church.
